Tourism students add a Yukon touch to a BC textbook
Instructor Hillarie Zimmermann found a way to make her assignments more meaningful and relevant to students. Her Tourism and Culture class added Yukon specific content to a BC tourism textbook based on various site visits and assignments in the course.
These Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) students were able to add what they learned directly to the textbook – an open educational resource (OER). They researched information online and developed case studies on Kwäday Dän Kenji – Long Ago Peoples Place – and Carcross Commons which were added to the textbook. Because the textbook is an OER, students don’t have to pay to use it. It’s also licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License, so the students’ research will live on and be used (and hopefully further enhanced) during the next offering of TOUR300.
Hillarie used the Scholarly Activity Grant (SAG) to provide her with the time she needed to design and link her assignments to the textbook. She also hired BBA student, Christy Huey (photo), to help edit the text, place the new Yukon specific information into the textbook, and update the version history in the back matter of the textbook to reflect the changes.
