VS 102 - Introduction to Visual Studies - Critical Ideas and Contemporary Issues
This lecture course introduces critical and analytical ways of engaging with visual culture within an international setting. With an eye to historical tradition, the course focuses mainly on the development of contemporary visual culture--art, design, news, advertising, TV, politics and scientific imagery. The production of visual culture is seen in relation to desire, ideology, gender, race and class, and students are introduced to a research methodology appropriate to artists and designers. Prerequisite(s): VS 101.
