LEAD CE14 - Navigating your role as Manager/Supervisor

Sometimes, people plan to become supervisors or managers, but sometimes it can happen suddenly and unexpectedly. This course is intended for people who have recently become supervisors or who are considering an opportunity to move into a managerial position. It will introduce the basic legal responsibilities of a supervisor or manager in any Yukon workplace. More importantly, it will explore how individuals and relationships can shift when one moves into a position and is responsible for overseeing others. Participants will walk away with more knowledge of how their relationship with work and others will change – and what they can do about it – when they take on the challenge of supervising or managing others.

This course is designed for anyone who is about to or has recently taken on a supervisory or managerial role, and wants to better navigate the complexities of managing people and responsibilities in the workplace.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, will be participants will be able to:

  • Understand the legal obligations of supervisors/managers under various pieces of Yukon legislation (e.g., Employment Standards, Human Rights, Workers’ Compensation, Occupational Health and Safety, etc.)
  • Create project plans and templates
  • Self-assess their strengths and areas for growth in the basic skills of supervision and management (e.g., organizational, time management, communication, interpersonal skills, etc.)
  • Explore how relationships with current colleagues may change when one moves into a supervisory or management position.
  • Know the supports they might access to help them through the transition into a supervisory or management position.
