WhitehorseBuilding a strong middle class means giving Canada’s youth the tools they need to find and keep good jobs.

That’s why Larry Bagnell, Member of Parliament for Yukon, on behalf of the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, announced a new project today that will give youth in Yukon job skills training and hands-on work experience.

ROSS RIVER—Rebekha Johnny loves her new, short hair and orange, red, purple and blue highlights.

“I always wanted my hair short. After I got it cut, I then started to experiment with colour because I was seeing other people with blue and purple and red and wanted to see how I would look,” said Johnny.

WHITEHORSE—Twenty-two university Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Directors, Indigenization leads and Elders from across Canada are in Whitehorse on Monday for a one-day workshop on Indigenizing University Governance hosted by Yukon College and the BC Association of Institutes and Universities (BCAIU).

The event will be co-facilitated by University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vianne Timmons and Professor of Higher Education and Dean of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto Dr. Glen Jones.

WHITEHORSE—Students in the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program at Yukon College are focusing on the issue of housing as part of National Social Work Week in Canada (March 19-23).

The students have organized a silent auction in order to raise money that will assist people who are transitioning from precarious housing situations to long-term housing.

“All proceeds will be shared between three community organizations participating in the Landlords Working to End Homelessness (LWEH) program – Blood Ties Four Directions, Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre and FASSY,” said Stacey McDiarmid, third-year BSW student.

College student success and donors celebrated

WHITEHORSE—The hard work and achievements of 42 Yukon College students will be celebrated this week at a special event called “Inspire: Student Success celebration”.

The event will bring together students who have received financial awards and the donors whose generosity make such awards possible. A total of $33,700 in bursaries and awards has been given to support students this academic year.

A new flight training simulator, the first of its kind in Canada’s North, has been installed at the Alkan Air Flight Academy in Whitehorse, Yukon. With support from the Government of Canada and the Government of Yukon, the simulator was purchased by Yukon College as part of the Aviation Management Diploma Program.
