Continuing Ed management courses give students “less stress with more success”
WHITEHORSE—During the past few years Dakwakada Capital Investments (DCI), a Whitehorse-based firm, has been growing and changing. DCI is continually looking to invest in its employees and expand their knowledge base, so the company signed up for Project Management training through Yukon College.
“We firmly believe that Project Management is a fantastic way to develop strong leadership and overall employment skills,” said Virginia Cobbett, DCI Office Manager and Community Liaison.
This training has supported the company’s employees and given them the confidence to take on new projects. It’s also helped them further their careers.
“I love to see people learn these skills that will help them in the future to have less stress with more success,” said National Project Management Inc. Instructor Maggie Ionescu-Hryhorenko, who will come to Yukon College from Toronto to lead the courses in October, November, and December. “The training focusses on teaching everybody to speak the same language—both the managers and the team members—so they can communicate better and work well as an organization.”
The skills are also transferrable to many different sectors, from government to education to private industry. “For example, I don’t have to be an expert in construction to manage projects successfully in that industry,” said Ionescu-Hryhorenko.
Yukon College offers a number of Project Management Courses from essential training to a week-long boot camp that prepares students for the Project Management Professional Certification exam.
“There is a need for these management skills in our community, and we’re providing local, professional training,” said Yukon College Continuing Education and Training Coordinator Scott Holliday. “It sure beats having to go Outside to get this certification.”
Along with a suite of Project Management classes, the Fall 2017 Continuing Education and Training Guide offers a wide range of courses to improve personal or professional skills, from Spanish Level 1 to FOODSAFE to Wilderness and Remote First Aid/CPR. This semester Continuing Ed is also offering a new expert-level Excel course to supplement its classes in bookkeeping and accounting.
