YC students have access to more funds than ever before; deadline is Sept. 30

WHITEHORSE—The Yukon College Foundation has succeeded in tripling the amount of money available to students through donors from $14,000 to $43,000 per year. Established just one year ago, the Foundation was established to advance the institution through philanthropy.

“Students need to know that their community is really behind them as they work to complete their education,” said Wendy Tayler, Yukon College Foundation Board Chair. “Yukon requires a skilled workforce and our business community is motivated to grow this locally.”

The Foundation board has now set a goal to grow annual student awards by a further $27,000 to $70,000. Jacqueline Bedard, Executive Director, External and Government Relations at Yukon College believes this can be achieved.

“In the past year we have found that donors are passionate about supporting students in furthering their education. Depending on the donor, they may be interested in funding students in a particular field, disadvantaged students, or students who show significant promise,” said Bedard.

Awards of up to $2000 provided through the Foundation help students overcome financial challenges they may face while pursuing their educational goals.

Companies and individuals who have donated to the Foundation this year include: Alkan Air, Aurora Geosciences, BDO Canada LLP, EDI Environmental Dynamics Inc., Kaminak Gold Corporation, Rolf and Margaret Hougen, SLR Consulting (Canada) Ltd., Small’s Expediting, Stantec, Whitehorse Motors, Yukon Fish and Game Association and the Yukon Chamber of Mines.

The Yukon College Foundation has a five-member board: Jim Wilson of RBC Royal Bank; Pat Tobler of EDI Environmental Dynamics; Allison Rippen Armstrong of ARA Environmental Consulting; Pierre Lacasse of Assante Wealth Management; and Tayler of Alkan Air and Whitehorse Motors.

Donors and student award winners will be introduced to each other at the annual student awards dinner in the Kinnikinnick Kaff on October 26th.
