Yukon College Campus undergoing renovations
WHITEHORSE—Yukon College is undergoing renovations that will help improve program delivery, student services and security at the Ayamdigut campus in Whitehorse.
“The Yukon government is pleased to support the programs and services at Yukon College with renovations that will contribute to services and safety for students, staff and visitors,” Minister of Education Elaine Taylor said.
The Yukon Research Centre will also see improvements over the next two years. These changes are part of regular work to help meet the dynamic requirements of courses, training and research activities. These renovations will allow the college to use the space available in the most cost-efficient way.
“This summer we have 50 staff and researchers working out of the Yukon Research Centre, up from six in 2009. The Research Centre is growing quickly and we are grateful for the support of the Yukon government to expand the available space to accommodate and support this important work. This moves the College towards achieving our strategic goal of expanding northern research and innovation opportunities,” Yukon College president Dr. Karen Barnes said. “The renovations will also improve the welcome and security we provide to students, instructors and visitors to Ayamdigut campus.”
Yukon College will also install a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) system – in common terms, phone service over the Internet. This system will allow two-way communication between the security office and all classrooms. In addition, it will improve communication between Ayamdigut and community campuses by enabling four-digit dialing throughout the entire college system.
Over the next two years, the college will be renovating the reception and admissions area to provide a better flow of movement for students when they are registering for programs and seeking information.
The estimated cost of the VoIP system is $192,000, with a further $100,000 estimated in 2015/16. The estimated cost for the renovations to the reception and admissions area and the Research Centre is $425,000 and $475,000 in 2015/16.
