Recipient of the Garfield Weston Award to Attend Yukon College
Whitehorse – Jude Wong, recipient of a 2010/11 Garfield Weston Entrance Award, has chosen to study at Yukon College, from among 100 institutions.
Wong has enrolled in the Business Administration program this fall and will incorporate electives from Liberal Arts and the Multimedia Communication program.
As a dance artist, she has recently wrapped up a number of projects and training events and is looking forward to her fall semester at the College. “My studies at the college will allow me to invest and expand on the skills I have developed in the arts community in order to further my involvement with the arts and cultural sector,” says Wong.
A long time Yukon resident, Wong’s effort within the community and commitment to her field have earned her the award which includes a tuition waiver at Yukon College, renewable for one or two additional years; a stipend renewable for one or two additional years; access to summer program funding; and mentorship.
“We are excited to welcome Jude to the Yukon College and pleased that she has chosen the college as her place of study. We know that she’ll be a valuable addition to our student body and look forward to working with her.” says Bente Sorensen, financial aid advisor at the college.
Wong will create a community service plan as part of the award requirements and will be volunteering with local organizations to integrate her academic learning with hands on experience.
The Garfield Weston Awards are administered by the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation and will distribute up to 25 Entrance Awards to students entering their first year of college studies in 2010-11. Recipients may chose from over 100 participating colleges or CEGEPs (Quebec higher education institutions) across Canada.
