From sinkholes to thaw slumps, some permafrost-related hazards impacting roads and communities in Yukon

landscape split

Permafrost thaw induced by climate change has many impacts on the lives and livelihoods of people living in the North. Changes in ground surface conditions result in natural hazards susceptible to damage buildings and infrastructure and to threaten the integrity of transportation networks. Dr. Fabrice Calmels is a Permafrost and Geoscience research Chair at the YukonU Research Centre. His talk will present and discuss various permafrost-related hazards studied by the YukonU Permafrost & Geoscience Research group at various location across Yukon as part of the SCOPe Lunch-and-Learn Webinar Series.

This webinar series offers SCOPe members and the public an opportunity to hear from those who are leading the charge to generate knowledge that addresses crucial and pressing questions for Yukon and beyond.
